Getting Out of Debt 101

nomoneyIn this day and age, many people end up running into unexpected debt. Unfortunately, many of these people end up completely lost when it comes to learning how to undo this debt. We are all more than capable of digging ourselves out of debt, but what it takes is to know what steps to take and what actions to avoid. There are three steps that are involved in the debt elimination process:

Debt Elimination Step #1 - First, you have to stop acquiring additional debt.

This is a step that can easily be accomplished within a single afternoon. It may seem to be self evident, but the reason why you are dealing with out of control debt is because you are continuously adding to it. Cut your credit cards up, do not finance a thing and stop using credit and lending to get by. It can be tough to do this, but you have to make it happen without making any excuses in the process. You do not need your credit cards, they will not help you, so stop relying on them right now.

Consider this:

  • You do not need credit cards to serve as a safety net,
  • You do not need your credit cards for the sake of convenience,
  • You do not need credit cards in order to earn cash back bonuses.

In other words, you do not need credit cards for any reason at all. If you are in debt, then these credit cards are simply acting as a trap to pull you deeper and deeper into debt. Later on, when your debts are under control and your finances are regulated again, then you may consider getting a new credit card. For now, however, there is no reason to keep even one around because your credit cards are not benefiting you in any way at all whatsoever.

After you have destroyed all of your credit cards, you can work on halting recurring payments. Cancel gym memberships; cancel automatically renewing accounts of any kind. Cancel anything that is automatically going to charge your credit card - Stop using your credit all together, no excuses.

Now call each and every credit company that you have an account with. Do not cancel any of your credit cards, but instead, ask if you can get a better deal. Find some kind of offer online that you can use as a bargaining chip. Some banks may not agree to the idea of matching competing offers, but most will so it is well worth trying and it definitely never hurts to ask. You may end up getting a really great deal for your credit cards. This doesn't mean that you should start using them right now, but it will make them easier on you financially until the point where they are paid in full.
