Creating a Budget 1
September 15th, 2009 | Budget, Personal Finance, money management techniques
Creating a budget may not initially sound like something that you are going to want to do. Just because it is not one of the most exciting things in the world for you to do, that does not mean that it is not vitally important in making sure that your financial house is kept in order. Before you begin the process of creating your own unique family budget, it is vitally important for you to realize this: In order for you to truly be successful in creating, sticking to and benefiting from a budget, you are going to need to provide as much detailed information as you possibly can. Ultimately, the result in the end is going to be that you will finally take a long hard look at where your money is actually coming from and where it is actually going. This is an easy tasks but it takes some knowledge and understanding.
The first thing that you are going to want to do is to gather every single financial statement that you can find. This is going to include your bank statements, your investment account statements, your most recent utility bills, and any other information that you have regarding sources of income or sources of expenses. The true key behind this entire process is that you need to be able to create a monthly average, and so the more information that you will be able to dig up, the better benefited you will be.
The next step in the process of creating your own budget is going to be to record every single one of your sources of incoming money, or income. If you are a self employed businessperson, or if you happen to have any other sources of income besides your normal profession, then you need to make sure that you are recording these as well. Make sure that you are recording this entire total as an overall monthly amount, including regular wage income, tip income and any other income that you generate, because knowing how much money you bring in is vitally important when it comes to addressing how much money is going back out again.
The next step in this process of creating your own budget will be to create a list of all of your monthly expenses. You need to write down a detailed list of all of the expected expenses that you are planning on incurring in a regular basis over the course of an entire month. This should absolutely include your monthly mortgage payment or rent payment, any car payments that you're making, grocery bills, auto insurance, health insurance, entertainment, utilities, dry cleaning, retirement planning, college savings or anything else that you are spending money on, on a consistent basis.
