Basics of Budgeting 2

Tracking Your Expenses

Now that you are familiar with how much income money you have coming into your home, it has become time for you to pay attention to the expenses that you have on a monthly basis. You should begin with the regular payments and the fixed payments that you make, such as your rental payment or mortgage payment, insurance payments, automotive payments, debt payments and taxes. For most people, these expenses are generally pretty fixed in nature and that means that the amount due every month is going to be relatively unchanging, at least for a while.

Now that you have listed out all of your fixed monthly expenses, the next thing that you are going to want to do is to dig down a little bit deeper to figure out exactly where the rest of your money happens to be going. You should take out your checkbook register, or get a copy of your latest bank statement to help you figure out all the answers in this step. Jot down how much you are spending on things like groceries, utilities, entertainment, subscriptions, and clothes and so on. It is important to be honest with yourself about how much you are spending on these things if you want to get the most out of the budget that you are creating.

Here is the Bottom Line:

Now you should have all of the information that is needed in order for you to create a good working budget. What you need to do is to total up the monthly income that you have and then the monthly expenses that you have. When you subtract your monthly expense total from the total of your income for the month, where does the number fall? If you have a positive number, then congratulations are in order because you are actually earning more than you spend. If you have a negative number, then budgeting is going to be that much more important to you because it will help you identify the deficiencies in your financial plan so that you can address them as well as remedy them sooner rather than later.

Now you should be able to visually see how much you are falling short, and this will make it possible for you to make the necessary adjustments in your spending or your saving in different areas of your lifestyle so that you can make improvements in your situation. More often than not you will find that a few small and simple adjustments in your spending habits can really go a long way in improving your financial situation. Eat out less often, cancel a magazine subscription, drop down a tier in your Netflix plan, and you will be surprised at how easily you can balance your budget and set your financial plans in motion in a positive direction once again.
