Basics of Budgeting 1
September 11th, 2009 | Budget, Personal Finance, money management techniques
For many people in this day and age, the word "budget" is spoken and immediately images of penny pinching and unpleasantly crunching numbers are conjured. Luckily for you, this could not be any further from the truth when it comes to understanding the basics of budgeting and what budgeting is really all about. The truth about budgeting is that the budget is absolutely at the cornerstone of creating your own solid financial future, regardless of what financial situation you are currently in, and once you know what you are doing, this isn't a hard thing to do at all.
First and foremost, what is a budget?
A budget is, simply put, nothing more than simply breaking down and planning out how much money is coming in, and where that money is going once you earn it. Can you imagine the possibility of a business reaching success if the owners of the business did not keep track of their incomes and their expenses? The same is absolutely going to hold true as well for you and when it comes to your own personal finances as well. If you do not know how much money you are earning, and where that money is going once it has been earned, then your road to eventual financial success is going to be a truly arduous one.
The biggest fear that many people have when it comes to the concept of creating a budget is they feel that budgeting means suddenly cutting back on all the fun types of spending such as drinking Starbucks or going out to dinner, or even renting the latest blockbuster. The truth is, while you may find that you are in need of some basic cutting back when it comes to your budget, you probably do not have to cut that many expenses unless you really are spending beyond your means. The only way that you are going to know what expenses are going to need to be cut is to actually sit down and formulate a budget once and for all.
Tracking Your Income
The first step in the process of creating a budget is going to be for you to determine how much income you are bringing in. This is a quite easy thing to do, and really only requires you to take a look at your biweekly or monthly paystubs. If you are married, then you are going to want to make sure that the income that your spouse earns is also included in this tally. In addition to the regular pay that you are earning from your job, you are also going to want include any other resources for incoming money that you have, such as side business ventures, interest payments, dividends and so on and so forth.
